Doom Eternal for PC is a first person shooter game, the fifth main title in the series and the direct successor to Doom. The player takes on the persona of the Doom Slayer, an ancient warrior locked in battle against demonic forces from Hell.
About the Game
The timeline from the previous game to this is unstated, but it is chronologically after the events of that game. As demonic forces overrun humanity, the Doom Slayer returns to kick butt and save the earth. And Mars. And a couple of other planets too.
The action, always speedy, is now even faster paced and slicker than ever before thanks to features like the addition of a ‘double-dash’ – a sudden spurt forward that can be activated in air or on land – to the already useful double-jump. Your avatar can use the environment to gain height, ambush or otherwise harass the opposition by climbing, swinging and even using the grappling feature on the new and lush Super Shotgun. (More about the latter, below).
As always with Doom games, violence is usually the answer: need to top up on health, ammo and gear? Go berserker on a demon and gather all you need from them! Want an extra edge on your melee attacks? Whittle down a demon’s health bar before unleashing an aptly named Glory Kill: this fills up your Blood Punch metre which adds a megaton or so of extra force to your attacks. Whenever you’re in doubt: double down on your attack!
Demons, Demons Everywhere!
The demons are cunning, and can adapt to damage dealt by your attacks. For example, shooting the hands off a demon to prevent them using their weapons on you now sees the demon using their feet and body to pound the ground, dealing damage to you through shock-waves if you get too close.
Demon enemies will be familiar to fans of the series, but try not to be too complacent. Not only are there brand new enemies to get to grips with, learning their powers, weapons and weaknesses, but some of the old rivals have been given upgrades to superior weaponry or improvements to power, strength and stamina.
Doom Slayer’s Weapons
You have a formidable task ahead of you, but your veteran demon hunter is more than up to the task. He is aided in this by a truly impressive arsenal of weapons:
- Super Shotgun Grappler/ Meat Hook: this device attaches to the Super Shotgun, and when deployed anchors your prey, pulling Doom Slayer closer to the demon to administer a killing blow, or holding the demon still so it cannot escape
- Super Shotgun: a returning star from the previous game, this is one of the weapons that the Slayer is equipped with when the game opens. It is a super powerful shotgun capable of destroying demons at a moderate range
- Ballista: this cunning weapon is an ultra strong very quiet crossbow that fires a range of missiles. Most of the time these projectiles do damage by slamming into the enemy, but occasionally they can be explosive in their own right, blowing up and doing even more damage when they hit
- Heavy Cannon: this is a multipurpose, heavy duty weapon that can be used as a sledgehammer to spray bullets all over the enemies, or it can be used more subtly as a sniper rifle, one bullet at a time, each shot being precisely aimed
